Michael W. O’Donnell / Player Development & Team Coach


Coach Michael W. O’Donnell gained a passion for the game of basketball at an early age playing at the Deseret Gym in Salt Lake City, Utah. O’Donnell played at West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah for Coach Robert Lyman from 1990-1994. After graduating from high school, O’Donnell received an opportunity from Coach Jeff Kidder to walk onto the basketball team at Dixie Junior College in St. George, Utah 1997-1998. Following college, O’Donnell served in the United Sates Navy from 1998-2001. O’Donnell started his coaching career in Minnesota with Grassroots Minnesota AAU Program. During his time with Grassroots, O’Donnell had the opportunity to be a part of the development of 20 plus Division 1 student athletes and a handful of future pro basketball players. O’Donnell credits his passion for working with student athletes to program director Brian Sandifer and his time with Grassroots Minnesota 2005-2010. O’Donnell started his high school coaching career at Roseville Area High School in Roseville, Minnesota as a Junior Varsity Coach 2008-2009. O’Donnell joined the Minnehaha Academy coaching staff in 2009, serving under Coach Lance Johnson as a player development/assistant coach 2009-2010. Returning to Utah, O’Donnell was greeted with an opportunity by Coach Robert Lyman to join his coaching staff at his alma mater. O’Donnell looks back on this opportunity with great admiration and gratitude. During his time coaching at West High, O’Donnell found himself coaching at every level and for his last two seasons he served as Associate Head Coach of the Panthers basketball team under Coach Michael Matheson and credits Coach Matheson for a great deal of his development as a basketball coach 2011-2014. O’Donnell Joined the Salt Lake Rebels AAU program in 2014. During his time with the Rebels, O’Donnell was involved in player development and coaching of 15u and 17u club teams. O’Donnell coached under UNLV Running Rebels alum, Evric Gray. And credits Coach Gray for a great deal of his understanding of how to develop high school basketball players 2014-2018. In 2017 O’Donnell joined Coach Gray’s coaching staff at Summit Academy High School in Salt Lake City, Utah and served as Coach Gray’s first assistant. O’Donnell also coached the Bears junior varsity team and played an intricate role in player development at Summit Academy High School.

O’Donnell pays a debt of gratitude to his father Kenneth O’Donnell and childhood friend Theodore “Teddy” Davis for instilling his lifelong passion for helping young people achieve their dreams through the game of basketball. O’Donnell is thankful to his mother, Mary O’Donnell for her example of charity for those less fortunate.

O’Donnell is currently working to complete his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. He and his wife Alyson are both from Utah and currently live in Salt Lake City.
